John Pettie, an Edinburgh-born artist who spent much of his career in London, is renowned for his contributions to genre painting and his mastery of depicting historical scenes. His painting The Flag of Truce exemplifies his interest in dramatic moments, capturing a tense encounter during wartime with vivid detail and emotional depth. Pettie became a member of the Royal Academy in 1866 and a full academician in 1874. While often associated with Romanticism, Pettie's work balances realism with a romanticized portrayal of human experiences.
