Border landscape
The painting titled Border landscape vividly captures the rugged terrain along the landscape of the Anglo-Scottish border during the era of the border reivers. These raiders, active mainly during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, operated in a culture of legalised raiding and feuding, regardless of victims’ nationality. The artist employs a Realism style to depict the harsh, stormy countryside, highlighting the tumultuous and lawless environment that defined this tumultuous border region under the reigns of the House of Stuart and the House of Tudor.
